Replacing a Failing Retaining Wall in Pemberton with Locally Sourced Granite
Location: Pemberton, BC
The Problem with this Retaining Wall
This project began with several issues affecting both the stability and usability of the property. The existing segmental retaining wall blocks were deteriorating, while the poor, sandy Pemberton native soil was contributing to erosion and movement along the slope. Without proper drainage and a stable retaining system, the walkway beside the house could not be safely or reliably maintained. See photo below and notice all the erosion.
The Solution: Locally Sourced Blasted Granite Rocks
We chose locally sourced blasted granite for the new retaining wall. Granite is exceptionally durable and provides the strength needed to retain soil on a sloped property. Its natural colour and texture also blend harmoniously with the surrounding mountain landscape, making it feel like part of the property rather than an added structure.
In the Sea-to-Sky region, a retaining wall must be designed to handle more than the weight of the soil behind it. Proper construction must also account for heavy precipitation, freeze-thaw cycles, drainage and seasonal soil movement. Natural granite was an ideal choice for creating a strong, long-lasting wall suited to these conditions.
Preparing and Building the Retaining Wall
The first stage involved removing the deteriorating wall and excavating approximately six to eight inches of the original native soil. The area was then backfilled with 3-inch-minus crushed gravel and thoroughly compacted to create a strong, stable base.
Each granite boulder was individually selected and positioned. The largest boulders were placed along the bottom of the wall to form a solid foundation, and progressively smaller boulders were used as the wall was built upward. Careful stone selection allowed us to create a secure structure while maintaining a natural, balanced appearance.
Backfilling was completed in layers as the boulders were stacked. Free-draining material was placed behind the wall to prevent water from becoming trapped and creating pressure against the stones. Geotextile fabric was also installed to stabilize the surrounding soil, filter water and prevent the sandy native material from washing into the drainage layer. Where required, perforated drainage pipe was installed to collect and redirect water away from the wall.
The end result was a 45 ft long wall, 3 ft in height.
A Functional New Walkway and Entrance
The finished retaining wall now securely supports the height of the walkway and provides proper access to the side entrance of the home. The project was completed with custom-ordered Barkman Rosetta® Dimensional Steps, creating a durable and attractive transition through the changing grades.
What was once an eroding slope with a deteriorating wall is now a stable, functional walkway that complements the natural surroundings and is built to withstand the freeze and thaw cycles of Pemberton’s climate.
